Real Estate Gurus
Mike and Irene Milin call themselves the "Dynamic Duo". They entered the field of real estate with no assets, just debt. After studying with other real estate gurus, they worked on making their fortunes in real estate, and claim that they became millionaires almost overnight by investing in small-income properties. In the late 1980s, Mike and Irene Milin started to teach their investment approach at seminars. They also produced home study courses and a book, “How to Buy and Manage Rental Properties” (1988).
Now, Mike and Irene Milin’s book is OK, but their strategy is too narrow. As one reader comments: “it focuses on a specific type of tenant (credit worthy) and a specific type of rental property (single-family)”. Another reader says: “It didn't take me long to realize that the few helpful pointers found here aren't worth the effort of putting up with the authors’ obnoxious egos.”
Those egos were back on the real estate scene recently, with a training company called National Grants Conference, based in Rochester, NY. The company arranges free conferences that are used as a platform to sell Mike and Irene Milin’s training program on how to find and write grants (enrolment fee - around $2000).
The biggest problem with the program is that it’s worth the money. Most of the information is available in the library for free. Also, Mike and Irene Milin mislead people about the amount of grants available. “What a scam!” says one investor. “After spending countless hours working on proposals we learned that the grants that are out there are very specific and nearly impossible to get.”
Lots of people tried to get their money back under the three-day right to cancel, but had difficulties. As a result, the Upstate New York Better Business Bureau has had more than 50 complaints about Mike and Irene Milin, mainly concerning their refunds policy.
